MONKEY FOREST

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, or better known as Ubud Monkey Forest, is the sanctuary and natural habitat of 1000 Balinese long-tailed Monkey, scientific name Macaca fascicularis.

This dense swath of lush jungle consists of 186 species of plants and trees in 12,5 hectares of forest, which was “built” in accordance to traditional Balinese Tri Hita Karana philosophy, which can be roughly translated as “"three causes of well-being". These three causes are: people in harmony with god, people in harmony with nature and harmony among people. To fulfil this principle, there are also three temples in the forest, all of them built around 1350.

The three temples are:

  • Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal - the main temple, used for worshipping the god Hyang Widhi in the personification of Shiva.

  • Pura Beji - also known as “Holy Spring” bathing temple, used before religious ceremonies to conduct purification and physical cleansing.

  • Pura Prajapati - used to worship Hyang Widhi in the personification of Prajapati.
